LONDON, ENGLAND
9th November 2000 - Information security specialist
Corporate Computer Consultancy Ltd. (CCCL) has published
a free glossary of information security and computer audit
terms through their website at .
The jargon-buster explains the security and control implications
of commonplace IT terms such as CD-ROM ("Useful to store
a known good copy of
operating
system and
application
program files on a
hardened
server"), as well as defining more obscure
specialist terms like Secure Sockets Layer ("SSL - An
encryption
protocol
that provides
authentication
and
confidentiality
to applications at the
IP
communications session layer").
Author Gary Hinson
explained: "We compiled the glossary for the benefit of
our own consultants and our customers but it deserves a
wider audience. Everyone knows how much Information
Technologists love jargon but in the specialist field of
information security, the language is evolving rapidly and
is often misunderstood, even by the professionals. Publishing
this glossary on the web alows us to incorporate and define
new terms as soon as they emerge. We are constantly
updating the jargon-buster with the latest information from
contributors worldwide."
The glossary
makes inteligent use of hypertext links. The A to
Z indexes allow quick navigation. Specialist terms
in the explanations are hyperlinked to their corresponding
definitions. "This is harder to describe than to use!"
Gary told us. "Visitors to our website just look up
a term, read the explanation and click on anything they
still don't understand. Anyone who has thumbed through
a thesaurus will soon get the hang of it."
According to
CCCL's Managing Director, Ebby John: "With around 300 phrases
already, this is the most comprehensive and up-to-date information
security glossary on the web and it's stil growing.
About half the material came from other published sources
but we've added the rest ourselves."
